BOP Federal Release Scope
The Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator is the national source for federal prisoners and release dates in its records from 1982 forward. It is not a Walton County jail roster and does not cover a Georgia state-prison sentence. A local booking tied to a federal writ or hold can end while federal custody continues.
BOP gives a clear release rule: when the listed date is in the past and no facility location appears, release from BOP custody occurred on that date. The person may still be on supervised release, parole, or in another correctional system. “Not in BOP custody” therefore does not always mean free from every legal obligation.
The BOP inmate locator provides the search. Its record explanation supplies the proper interpretation and cautions that dates can change.
Confirm a Federal Release
Search by BOP register number when available because it is more precise than a name. A name search may require race, age, or sex fields to distinguish similar people. Compare every identifier before treating the record as the right person.

- If the date is past and no facility is shown, treat it as release from BOP custody, then check any other system or supervision.
A future date is projected and may be recalculated. BOP warns that First Step Act and other credit recalculations can change dates, so check again periodically. A past date with a facility still listed should be read in context rather than forced into the no-facility rule.
The Walton release-record search applies only to the local jail event. Use it when a person was temporarily held in Walton before or during a federal case.
BOP Locator and Record Access
The locator is an online federal service, not a Walton office. It supplies public search results. For records beyond the locator, BOP FOIA or the federal court record may be appropriate, depending on the document sought.

Purpose: federal custody and release-date lookup
A federal court docket may explain the sentence, judgment, or supervised-release term. The relevant U.S. Marshals or federal case contacts may be needed for a pretrial or writ-related custody question. No public Walton-specific U.S. Marshals released-inmate list was found.
Walton Holds and Federal Transfers
A person can appear in Walton County Jail while a federal case or detainer exists. The county booking documents the local stay. A Release Date on that booking shows departure from Walton custody, not necessarily release to the community. The person may transfer to federal custody or another agency.
Check the Walton detail for arresting agency, case-tracking agency, charges, disposition, and release date. Then search BOP if the person was federally sentenced. For a federal pretrial matter that has not entered BOP custody, use the federal court docket and appropriate federal contacts.
The Walton Sheriff's open-records process can provide the local booking and release record. A precise request asks for the release date and time, discharge authority, receiving agency or transfer information if maintained, and related charge fields. That record does not replace BOP's federal result.
Why BOP Release Dates Change
A federal date can change after sentence-credit calculations, First Step Act review, court action, or another correction. BOP specifically advises users to check back because recalculation may revise the displayed date. Do not arrange time-sensitive plans around an old capture without refreshing the live record.

Supervised release is a federal court-ordered community term that may follow imprisonment. It is not the same as remaining in a BOP facility. Review the judgment or appropriate supervision record for the controlling terms.
Federal, State, and ICE Differences
GDC is the state-prison system. Search its active and inactive offender records for a Georgia sentence. The Parole Board and DCS cover parole decisions and community supervision. None of those state sources replaces BOP for a federal sentence.
ICE detention is also separate. ICE's locator covers current immigration custody and certain longer CBP custody. A federal criminal release can be followed by immigration detention, and a Walton release can be followed by either system. Check ICE directly when the record identifies that possibility.
Georgia VINE is a notification and status channel for participating sources. It is not a substitute for BOP. A VINE alert can be cross-checked with the federal locator and federal court record when the underlying custody is federal.
Use the Walton court file for the local disposition and BOP for the federal result. A county warrant, federal writ, state sentence, and immigration hold can appear in one person's history without being the same custody event.

Verify the Federal Record Trail
Federal court records are the long-term source for the judgment and supervised-release term. The locator is strongest for custody location and the displayed release date. When the question is why the sentence has a particular length or what follows imprisonment, obtain the judgment or later court order rather than inferring from one locator field.
A formal Walton request remains useful when the person passed through the county jail. Identify the exact booking and ask for receiving-agency or transfer information if maintained. The Sheriff may hold only the local portion, while BOP and federal court sources hold the later federal record.
Name-only searches can miss a result due to spelling, aliases, or identity fields. Search by register number when possible and compare age, race, sex, and other returned details. Never join a Walton booking to a federal record based only on a common name.
